This Valentine’s Day Discover Your Most Important Relationship

Even though rampant commercialization has done its best to appropriate the day, the true meaning and purpose of Valentine’s Day remain heartwarming — a day to take stock of the relationships that support you in your life.

Without the roses and hearts, it becomes a day to celebrate love and those who love you. Stop and tell the people you may take for granted that they are seen and their love is fully and deeply reciprocated.

Today can also be a day to take stock of another relationship. I would go so far as to say the most important relationship in your life — with yourself.

The circle of love in life begins and ends with one person, you.

So take a moment to be with yourself — not just on Valentine’s Day, but every day.

Remember you also need attention, kindness, acceptance, and love.

Realize the one person whose attention and care you have a right to is your own.

Recognize that the person who understands you, your hurt, your pain, and your joy best in life is yourself.

And know that if you do not champion, protect, defend, support, and take your side — no one else will.

This Valentine’s Day promise to do and be better. Acknowledge your own needs and rights along with everyone else’s. And fill yourself up first and only then take care of everyone else in your life.

Then look up, take a deep breath, wrap your arms around your amazing self, and say I love you to yourself.

If you are someone who loves and takes care of herself — know you will go from strength to strength in your life.

For those beginning this journey towards self-acceptance and love, I promise you it is the most rewarding journey you will ever take.

And for those struggling to start or who have lost their way, I want you to know that if you have lost your way, I can help you get back to yourself and to love.
